The department of anesthesiology, Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, was established in 1958. After decades of hard work, our department has developed into a well-functioning clinical platform, providing high quality clinical work for the patients, medical education of anesthesia to the medical students, and also organizing massive work of scientific clinical research of anesthesia.

Milestones of the development:
1996
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) was put to use.
1998
Autologous blood transfusion technology and other technologies to reduce the clinical use of blood were used. With all those technologies, we successfully rescued patients from multiple cases of critical conditions.
Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) was used in clinical practice.
2002
Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution (ANH) was started to be used in our clinical practice.
Nerve stimulator guided regional nerve block was widely used in clinical practice. And all these years, we have always been in the leading position in our nation.
2006
Ultrasound guided regional nerve block and deep venous puncture.
2010
Hemodynamic monitoring became a clinical routine.
2012
Four specialized groups were established, aiming to elevate the quality of our clinical practice and further deepen the scientific research in various fields of anesthesia.
Anesthesia depth monitoring became a clinical routine.
2013
Huilongguan District of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital was put into use.
Become a regional anesthesia training center of Chinese Society of Anesthesiology.
Become an inhalational anesthesia training center of CSA.
2014
Become a blood management training center of CSA.
Target controlled infusion (TCI) intravenous anesthesia became a clinical routine.
2015
Become an orthopedics anesthesia training center of CSA.
Successfully conducted the first regional anesthesia training course of AARS
Successfully conduct national training course of regional anesthesia teachers.
Awarded as excellent national training center of regional anesthesia.
Clinical work: We are practicing general anesthesia (inhalation anesthesia, total intravenous anesthesia, Combined intravenous-inhalation anesthesia), spinal anesthesia (continuous epidural anesthesia, subarachnoid block, combined spinal epidural anesthesia), peripheral nerve block (cervical plexus block, brachial plexus block, lumbar plexus block, sciatic nerve block, femoral nerve block, fascia iliac block, paravertebral block etc.) for our patients. Every day in our clinical practice, we monitor the direct arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure (CVP), use minimally invasive hemodynamics monitoring technique (such as Picco, Flotrac) , monitor anesthesia depth (BIS, entropy), use arterial blood gas analysis (ABG), practice the autologous blood transfusion technology, and also the patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) technology, to provide better anesthesia and better perioperative care.
Medical education: Our department provides medical education for the medical students of medical college of Peking University. We are obligated with the course of introduction to surgery for the students of 8 year curriculum at the moment. We also have postgraduate students. As one of the standardized resident training organizations of Beijing, we have cultivated a number of resident physicians, who are now working for their original hospital. We send young promising physicians overseas to pursue advanced technologies of anesthesia, and now they are all back working in the department.
We conduct the peripheral nerve block anesthesia seminar and the national blood protection course every year.
Scientific research: Regional block anesthesia, critical trauma anesthesia, perioperative blood conservation, has always been the focus of scientific research in the department. We have published more than 100 papers in the core journals, 4 SCI papers.
Development: According to the direction of hospital development, we will adjust the structure of the specialty groups, setting certain developing goals. Our clinical work and scientific research should impact each other. We should also promote our advantages. The department also provide excellent training platform and opportunities for the young physicians, encourage them to broaden their horizon.
