The Department of Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital is the first clinical specialty in China that specializes in the treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors. Professor Song Xianwen, the pioneer in Chinese sarcoma treatment, was the first director of our department, while Professor Xu Wanpeng, Professor Cai Youbo, Professor Niu Xiaohui, and Professor Liu Weifeng were the second, third, fourth, and fifth director respectively. The department develops rapidly in aspects of medical care, education, and scientific research. Until February 2024, our center has admitted more than 30,000 hospitalized patients with bone and soft tissue tumors and has the largest single-center digital musculoskeletal tumor database in China. The database contains all bone and soft tissue tumors, including primary bone and soft tissue tumors, malignant bone metastases, and hematopoietic system tumors with bone diseases. Moreover, our center is the first department to use a comprehensive therapy course including preoperative chemotherapy, surgery, and postoperative chemotherapy to treat malignant bone and soft tissue tumors in China, and also the first center to apply digital orthopaedic technologies such as navigation system to bone tumor surgery, and originally to use the new limb-preserving methods such as tumor segmental resection, inactivation and replantation, femoral Z osteotomy and rotation hip transposition with allograft reconstruction after pelvic tumor resection, greatly improving patient survival and limb-preserving rates. Additionally, the research on surgical methods for spinal, pelvic, and sacral tumors is at an international leading level. Meanwhile, the intelligent orthopaedic technology in our center ranks forefront in the world. We developed intraoperative navigation technology for bone tumors based on C-arm 3D CT images and key technologies for computer navigation-assisted precise resection of malignant bone tumors based on imageomics. Apart from that, our department is also the first center to develop and apply intelligent bone tumor surgical robots in China. The 5-year and 10-year survival rates after surgery for osteosarcoma have reached the international advanced level, and the admitted diseases include all types of primary and secondary bone and soft tissue tumors.
