In the past sixty years, many young doctors began their career as the residents of Jishuitan hospital. They work hard and gradually become the most brilliant orthopedics doctors in China. At the beginning of the 1999, after standard and systemic professional training of sports medicine abroad, some capable and outstanding young doctors came back to China and began the practice of the advanced theory and technique they had learnt. With great support of the hospital, they established the department of sports medicine.

After ten years of hard working, the sports medicine center has become one of the most famous departments for treating sports injury in the state. Now, there are 72 beds for patients with 18 doctors, among them.They now mainly perform arthroscopic and open surgery for the knee, shoulder, elbow, hip and ankle joints. They perform over than 3500 cases each year, including treatment for the ligaments injury of the knee joint, meniscus repair and MAT, cartilage repair, patella instability, shoulder instability, rotator cuff injury, shoulder joint fracture, TSA, arthroscopic treatment for the elbow joint, hip impingement and labral tears, and treatment for the ankle joint under arthroscope.

The sports medicine department has always tried to get to the top-level in the world since established. Following modern sports medicine theories, they renew the methods of the diagnosis and treatment, set up new rehabilitation programs, introduce popular minimal invasive arthroscopic surgery technique, and make systemic evaluation and follow-up system. All the doctors have finished systemic training of the arthroscopic technique, and many of them attend academic conferences at times.They have made great progress in the surgical techniques, some of which are first introduced in the world. A great number of patients have been cured and have accepted by the population. They also provide medical service for the national sports teams.

The scientific research of the Sports Medicine Center is also of high quality. Now there are more than 10 scientific research programs which are under controlled, such as National natural science foundation of China, the 10th five-year key programs for science and technology development of China. Directed by the innovation spirit, they developed many new surgical techniques such as replacement of the shoulder joint, arthroscopic treatment for the shoulder instability, arthroscopic treatment for the rotator cuff injury and elbow joint, arthroscopic treatment for the ankle joint instability, arthroscopic treatment for the hip impingement, MAT, reconstruction of the PLC, treatment for the patella instability, arthroscopic surgery under navigation, and some of the technique are first proposed in the world. They have published more than 100 articles on the core journals in recent years, obtained 40 state invention patents. They have won the Beijing Science Award in 2008 and the new century talented person of the Beijing in 2010.

On the support of the hospital and department, many young doctors have also make great achievement, and become members of many academic organizations, such as Chinese Orthopaedic Association, Chinese Arthroscopy Association, Chinese Sports Medicine Association, ISAKOS, and Asia-Pacific Orthopaedic Society For Sports Medicine(APOSSM).

They now make effort to popularized the sport medicine treatment theory and arthroscopy surgery in the country, aiming at improving the country’s sports medicine treatment and arthroscopic surgery, achieving the top level of the other countries. They will train more than 10 surgeons on the arthroscopic surgery from all over the country each year, and give lectures or hold academic conferences at times. They organize short train courses for 4 times each year, the content including lectures, model manipulation and surgery visiting. Their courses emphasize practical work and communication face-to-face.

The sports medicine department now is aiming at becoming top-level sports medicine center.
