The predecessor of Neurology Department in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital was the neurology group of Internal Medical Department established in 1992. After more than 30 years development, there are 19 doctors, 5 medical technicians and 16 nursing staff in Neurology Department.
Neurology Department is relatively large department in internal medicine system with 42 inpatient beds, severing for 60000 outpatients and 1000 discharged patients annually. Most physicians below 40 years old have master's degrees, including 11 MDs (Doctor of Medicine), who are educated or trained in Union Hospital, Peking University First Hospital, Peking University Third Hospital, Xuanwu hospital, PLA General Hospital, etc. Outstanding doctors are sent to United States, Switzerland and some other countries for further neurology clinical training, researching to accumulate experiences.
Younger generations are gradually forming the backbone in medical, teaching, and research business. Medical teams are excellent, serious and responsible, while paramedics are pragmatic, tenacious and hardworking. The patient ward is regarding as an excellent demonstration in the hospital.
The department laboratory is able to provide medical examination such as EEG, EMG, transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD), cerebrospinal fluid cytology, and neuropsychological tests. The Department provides treatments for various types of neurology common diseases, such as acute cerebrovascular disease, common demyelinating disease, spinal cord disease, peripheral neuropathy, muscle diseases and degenerative disease, etc.
In recent years, the department based on the actual situation, focused on the future in order to formation the characteristics of our own and enhancing the comprehensive strength of the hospital. Jishuitan Hospital is famous for the department of orthopedics. Some patients who wanted to be in therapy actually had spinal cord disease instead of orthopedics disease. Disorders of spinal cord might be the important direction of future clinical research.
We have the diagnosis and treatment of demyelinating myelopathy (multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, isolated myelitis etc.), infectious diseases (such as Myelophthisis), occupying lesion (meningiomas, schwannomas, ependymoma, astrocytoma, inflammatory granuloma swollen, lymphoma), spinal vascular diseases (vascular malformation of the spinal cord, vertebral artery dissection), paraneoplastic myelopathy, nutrition related spinal cord disease, hereditary spinal disease, motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, juvenile proximal spinal muscular atrophy), spinal lesions caused by spine lesions (Hirayama disease, hyperparathyroidism with spine and spinal cord lesion, syringomyelia, tethered cord syndrome) and a large number of spinal cord diseases. We had accumulated rich experience and built a Solid foundation for further study.
Neurology difficult cases discussion system is established and insisted on every Thursday to further improve clinical diagnosis treatment and strengthen academic exchanges. A large number of neurologic difficult rare cases are diagnosed with significant effect.
Teaching: For years, Department undertake the teaching task of "Neurology" for 4th clinical medical college of Peking University. "Excellent teacher" are won for 2 times due to the high quality of teaching.
Research: Department has participated in the national “9th Five-Year Plan” “10th Five-Year Plan”, "Eleventh Five-Year Technology Support Program" and many other multi-center researches. Department has also applied for Science and Technology Fund of Beijing Municipal Health Commission, and Beijing Jishuitan hospital department research fund independently. Every year papers of research achievement are published in the domestic professional core journals and SCI journals.
