Department of Adult Joint Reconstructive Surgery (AJRS) of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital was founded in 1957. It has been one of the traditionally important departments in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. From 1960 till now, Dr. Song Xianwen, Dr. Guo Xingtang, Dr. Wang jincheng, Dr. Zhou Yixiong and Dr. Zhou Yixin have been appointed Director of AJRS chronologically. Dept. of AJRS now has 31 Surgeons and 69 inpatient beds which can be extended to 80 beds if needed. We provide medical service to patients on diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of bone and joint diseases (except oncology and traumatology), such as degenerative joint disease, osteonecrosis, inflammatory arthritis, developmental or metabolic bone disease, neuromuscular disorders. We now perform more than 4,000 cases of joint replacement annually，and approximately 30,000 joint replacement surgery have been performed in our department to date.

Dept. of AJRS introduced monoblock acetabular component in 1957. From 1962 to 1972, Director of our department, Dr. Guo Xingtang, began research on femoral head replacement surgery, and developed Type 72 total hip components and performed the first total hip replacement surgery in China. Our Dept. has gained 40 years of clinical experience, with average annual surgery volume more than 1000, and the longest postoperative follow-up of more than 37 years. Our Dept. has been nationally top-ranked for both volume and quality of joint replacement procedures.

Besides joint arthroplasty, Dept. of AJRS can provide medical service on peri-articular osteotomy, triple arthrodesis, a variety of bone and joint deformity correction and reconstruction. In 1975, Dr. Jia Youmin and Dr. Wang Jincheng introduced Rotational Acetabular Osteotomy (RAO) which is used till now. Dept. of AJRS is one of the few institutions in which patients can receive Ganz osteotomy.

On April 8th, 2002, Dept. of AJRS established the first domestic joint replacement registry in China. Analysis of follow-up and survivorship of joints quoted from Maarice Müller joint evaluation center showed more than 90% of 20-year survival rate.

Dept. of AJRS participated in several textbook writing and publications. From 1989 till now, about 300 published papers have been published and included in core periodical catalogue. We have hosted tens of international hip and knee arthroplasty conferences. Three doctors are included in Beijing expert database. Dr. Jia Youmin won several prizes awarded by Beijing government and Ministry of Health. Dr. Guo Xiaozhong was awarded the third sci-tech progress prize for the research on the relationship between AS and HLA-B27. Dr. Zhou Yixin was granted “Elite of Science and technology” award and won the national second sci-tech progress prize. Now, the standard of clinical and research work of Dept. of AJRS in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital has reached world-class level.
