Foot And Ankle Surgery Department
The Foot and Ankle Surgery Department of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital originated from the Foot and Ankle Treatment Group of the Department of orthopedic trauma, established in 1998. On September 4, 2017, the Foot and Ankle Specialist Outpatient Clinic was opened, and in March 2018, the Foot and Ankle Surgery Department was officially established, becoming one of the hospital's eight orthopedic specialties and the youngest clinical orthopedic department. Since its establishment, under the leadership of the first department head, Professor Wu Yong, the department has adhered to the motto of "Integrity, Empathy, Diligence, Cooperation." After five years of arduous initial development, the department's medical and nursing teams have grown steadily, gradually establishing the Jishuitan model of integrated diagnosis, treatment, nursing, and rehabilitation for foot and ankle-related diseases. It has quickly become a leader in the domestic foot and ankle field and strives to align with international standards.
In August 2021, the department was relocated from the Xinjiekou campus to the Xinlongze campus. The new campus's operation has become a "booster" for the development of the Foot and Ankle Surgery Department, accelerating the launch of a new model of "clinical + research" dual development. Under the leadership of the discipline leader, Professor Wu Yong, the department sees over 14,000 outpatient visits annually and performs approximately 1,800 surgeries each year. The department continues to innovate and challenge difficult cases in the field of foot and ankle surgery, undertaking pioneering work that has filled many gaps in the hospital and the domestic professional field.
Since its establishment, the Foot and Ankle Surgery Department has continually focused on the following specialties: fractures and trauma of the foot and ankle; post-fracture sequelae; sports injuries of the foot and ankle; congenital and acquired non-traumatic disorders of the foot and ankle; various congenital foot disorders, and complex lower limb and foot and ankle deformities caused by poliomyelitis and cerebral palsy. The department leads the nation in ankle preservation treatment, total ankle replacement, post-traumatic reconstruction of the foot and ankle, and correction of complex lower limb and foot and ankle deformities. It has also been the first in the country to perform computer-assisted robotic navigation in foot and ankle surgery and systematic stepwise ankle preservation treatment for ankle arthritis. In recent years, technologies such as ankle arthroscopy, surgical navigation robots, and the Taylor spatial frame external fixator have gradually been widely applied in the department. The 3D-printed customized partial talus prosthesis replacement technology is at the international leading level, and the 3D-printed Patient-Specific Instrumentation for total ankle replacement technology is at the domestic leading level.
Guided by the hospital's motto of "Sincere, Excellence, Intention," the Foot and Ankle Surgery team upholds the departmental motto of " Integrity, Empathy, Diligence, Cooperation," continually promoting the profound cultural essence of the hospital and the department. In this new historical period, all department members will remain true to their original aspirations, innovate and develop, and strive to provide high-quality medical services to the public.
