Clinical Duties
A) Ward Duties
Close supervision is an important component of training programme. In each of the subspecialty departments, there are several teams led by consultants or associate consultant. Every trainee is under the direct supervision of these senior doctors who have ward round with them daily.
B) Specialist Out-patient Clinic
JST is a tertiary referral center for orthopaedics, receiving patients from all over the mainland China. Several subspecialty clinics have been established to meet the need. The patients are suggested to see doctors in corresponding subspecialty according to their condition at the register hall. So , doctors in subspecialty clinic can see large amount of patients whom they are interested in. This provide a good opportunity for trainees to get adequate clinical exposure in a short period of time.

C) Elective Operation
In each of the subspecialty orthopaedic department, there is a weekly preoperative meetings for detailed discussion of the surgical indication and techniques. Intra-operative supervision is ensured in the presence of senior surgeons. Trainee’s surgical log book will be audited by the trainer to ensure adequate surgical exposure.
D) Emergency Call
The hand surgery department, the orthopaedic trauma department and the pediatric orthopaedic department are the three departments responsible for the majority of the emergent cases. Trainees rotating to these three departments have a large exposure to trauma cases. In other subspecialty departments, there are also emergency all, responding for emergent cases such as acute low back pain, pathologic fracture etc. The emergency call system basically is a two-tier system. The trainees will have 6-7 calls per month. The trainees and attending doctors are usually work together in treating emergency cases. The senior surgeons will stay in the hospital over night during their call day, and can provide direct supervision to our trainees when needed.
